Ysabel Duron is the founder of The Latino Cancer Institute, a national network of Latino agencies dedicated to diminish cancer risk. An award-winning journalist, Duron’s current national work focuses on capacity building in racial and ethnic communities to partner in systems change to address inequities.
We emerge from this virtual convening in gratitude, with hope for what the future holds. The past year and a half have been immensely challenging. Pre-existing racial inequities have deepened, undermining communal well-being yet also clarifying the imperative to transform the systems intended to support health, opportunity, and flourishing for all.
As we observed during the Forum, our Santa Cruz County community has remained focused and committed to improving health outcomes day by day, in pandemic times and beyond. We credit an inspiring group of extremely dedicated local leaders who have called forth effective action from every corner of the community. Thank you to all of these leaders, and especially to Cat Willis, Jennifer Herrera, Maria Cadenas, Steve McKay, and members of the Safety Net Clinic Coalition, for inspiring our community to continue working together!

Thank you for taking part in a conversation focused on creating an environment where all Santa Cruz residents can thrive. We invite you to listen again - or for the first time to the words of Ysabel Duron and our panelists. Please share them with others and invite new conversations about how to work together to close racial health gaps. Access the recording here.

2020 HIP ANNUAL COMMUNITY FORUM
Changing the Odds:
Exploring Social Determinants of Health
Thursday, May 28th, 2020
11:00AM - 12:30PM
HIP's 2020 Annual Community Forum welcomed Dr. Anthony Iton MD, JD, MPH, Senior Vice President for Healthy Communities at The California Endowment. Dr. Iton leads and participates in statewide efforts to advance policies and partnerships that build healthy communities in California. He believes that restoring democratic engagement and political power in underserved communities is the way to improve residents’ health, and that one’s zip code should not influence one’s wellbeing.
Following Dr. Iton's presentation, Keisha Browder, Chief Executive Officer at United Way of Santa Cruz County, facilitated a lively Q&A session with Dr. Iton.
To close the event, the Health Improvement Partnership of Santa Cruz County (HIP) awarded the Lifetime Game Changer Award to Michael Milward, CEO of Hospice of Santa Cruz County, for his unwavering support, and heartfelt impact on the wellbeing of our communities.
